Two Secrets and all the stuff inbetween
I started with poetry. Private. Self expression. I wrote a few poems for people I cared about. Eventually I was caught. An amazing lady asked me to write lyrics for her. That was scary. My first thought was, I'm not Janice Kapp Perry. If you're LDS you get that. Janice Kapp Perry is to LDS music what Max Lucado is to Christian bookstores.
But I did it, cuz I love me a challenge. The sad part is, I wasn't ready. Ready to be critiqued that is. I was 18. I thought the way it comes to you is the way it should end up. Let me just say, this is not how writing works.
Somehow, despite my immaturity, we put a tape together. Wait, do I need to explain what a tape is? Family and friends loved it. For me, I was just reminded of the, "what could've beens."
I've continued to write lyrics on request. And actually have quite a collection scattered in draws and files. Somewhere.
A few years ago I felt a craving for an English class at BYU. I know for most people cravings involve chocolate or pickles. Or if you're the special rare sort like, Ann Cannon, cravings are the compass of your life. To be such a woman.
I had no clue who Professor Lisa Hale was when I signed up for her class. Oh, but I do now. The woman has Michael Jordan mad skills when it comes to molding a writer. Because of her, ten months ago I decided I wanted to take a whack at writing a novel. Thanks Lisa.
The interesting part is, writing hasn't just been about writing. It's been friendships I don't know how I lived without before. It's self discovery, clarity, pain and severe joy. It's tears and laughter laced with frustration and elation. It's life.
One more secret about authors: They are the coolest and most generous neighbours you could ever have.
Amen! Thanks for being my writing friend.
